Giving in Secret

Begin with two minutes of silence and stillness before God.

Hey everyone, and welcome back to today’s Daily Devo!

We’ve been exploring generosity together this week, starting with Paul’s words in Galatians 6. Paul encouraged us to carry each other’s burdens and to see our generosity as seeds planted for a future harvest. But today, we’re shifting from Paul’s words to Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 6. Jesus offers a different, yet complementary perspective—a glimpse into the quiet, unseen side of generosity.

In Matthew 6, Jesus talks about giving without putting on a show. He says, “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them.”

Oof. I’m not going to lie, that’s challenging to me.

I think we’ve all felt the tug of wanting others to notice when we’re doing something good. There’s a satisfaction in being recognized, in knowing that people see the work we’re putting in. But Jesus is inviting us into a different way of living. He’s saying that some of the most beautiful acts of generosity happen quietly, away from the spotlight, where only God sees.

This isn’t always easy to embrace. Personally, I know that feeling of wanting acknowledgment. Sometimes we put in effort, time, or resources, and there’s a part of us that hopes someone will notice. But Jesus is asking us to let go of that desire. He’s showing us a path where generosity isn’t about being seen by others but about deepening our relationship with God. When we give in secret, when we let go of needing praise, we allow God to shape our hearts. We start to experience the joy of giving simply for the sake of giving, knowing that God sees every act, no matter how small.

But here’s the amazing beauty of it: giving in secret frees us from the weight of others’ opinions. When we give with only God as our audience, our generosity becomes something pure and meaningful. And the reward? It’s not something we can measure in applause or likes. It’s a closeness to God, who knows us intimately and sees the true value of every gift we offer.

Jesus is calling us to remember the power of what’s unseen. When we give in secret, we open ourselves up to a new level of trust and intimacy with the Lord. God’s “well done” becomes enough.

And, well, shouldn’t that be enough?

Take two minutes to reflect in silence.
Reflection:
  • Are there times when I find myself wanting recognition for my generosity? How can I refocus my heart to give purely for God’s approval?
  • What are some ways I can practice “secret giving” this week, focusing on acts of kindness and generosity that only God sees?
  • How does knowing that God sees and values every hidden act of generosity encourage me to give with a humble and joyful heart?
  • Prayer: Father, thank You for seeing every act of generosity, even those that go unnoticed by others. Help me to let go of the need for recognition and to find joy in giving for You alone. Shape my heart to give with humility, knowing that You see and value every gift. Draw me closer to You in the quiet moments and help me find peace in knowing that Your “well done” is more than enough. May my generosity reflect Your love and bring honor to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
