Read Jonah 1:1–18.
What stands out to you in this chapter? What are some consistent themes in the chapter? Can you identify with Jonah in any way?
1. Reflect on the concept of running from God. In what ways have you done this when you felt God calling you into something new? Why do you think Jonah ran?
2. What are some of the areas in which we are hesitant to obey God immediately? Why is this the case? Where is “Ninevah” for you?
3. Why do you think Jonah is sleeping during the storm? What stands out about the sailor’s actions compared to Jonah’s? What storms has God sent into your life to draw you back to Him?
4. Jonah claims to fear the Lord, but his actions suggest otherwise. What are some ways that we separate what we say we believe from how we live?
5. Jonah asked the sailors to throw him into the sea to save their lives. How does this differ from Jesus, the Greater Jonah, and His sacrifice for us (Matthew 12:41)?
