Read Psalms 53-54

Head

The psalms we’re reading today were written by King David, just like the chapters we read yesterday. David talked to God about everything he was going through, which we can see in the words written down for us to read in the Bible today. In these two passages, David was having a very difficult time. In Psalm 53, he talks to God about how sad it makes him to see that people are not following God and are doing evil things. It troubles David to know that people are doing bad things in the world instead of obeying God. In Psalm 54, David is talking to God while he’s in hiding. He had an enemy named Saul, a very jealous man, that wanted to find him, hurt him, and even kill him. Even though David was very afraid and unsure of what might happen, he asked God for his protection and help. Both of these psalms remind us that just like David, we can trust in God even in times of trouble!

Heart

David was dealing with a very frightening time! While we might ever go through something as scary as his situation with Saul, there will be times in our lives when we feel lonely, sad, or scared. When we go through times of difficulty, we can call on the same God that David talked to in these psalms. We can trust that God is our protector, defender, and our helper! A few verses in the Bible even call God our shield! No matter what we go through - good or bad - we can cry out to God and He will answer us. He will never leave our side or let us down.

Hands

One of my favorite Bible verses, Isaiah 41:10, says: “Do not fear, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and I will help you. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." Can you think of something that is causing you fear or worry lately? A bully? A sick family member? The dark? No matter what it is, we can find peace knowing that God is bigger than any fear we face, and he is holding us when we are afraid.

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for being my shield. Thank You for protecting me from my fears and giving me strength. I know I do not have to be afraid because You are always by my side. Amen.
